Hi everyone, my (pseudo) name is Katherine Knight. Valley in the Midnight Sun is my first novel, though I'm still in the process of writing it. The idea for this book actually came from two other books based on life after nuclear attack: Alas Babylon (which we all hated reading in class) and Z is for Zachariah (which I actually enjoyed). So, without further adieu, here's a summary of Valley in the Midnight Sun...

My name is Ashley Brooke, one year ago, my life was destroyed. Nuclear attack. For years, it was a highly discussed issue. It was on TV, in the newspaper, on the radio. It was such a common topic though, that we didn't take it as seriously as we should have. I live in a small farm town, so small in fact that we didn't have our own school. I remember that last day so clearly. About a week into summer, there was a calm night, but then, the sky lit up, red and orange bathed it, soaking it in its murderous light. I had known at that moment that everyone was dead, except for me, Ashley Brooke, a sixteen-year-old girl at the time. Everyone left the town, running in fear, or searching for family. Others, like my parents, left to search the next town for survivors. No one came back. Days, weeks, and months passed by, but no one returned. I realized then that they were dead. As I watched the land around me turn black and gray, I realized Radiation killed everything it touched, including my family and friends. Six treacherous months passed, and suddenly, a boy (a year or two older than me) showed up on my farm. Zach (that was his name) was soon my only friend. I confided in him, I trusted him, and I was starting to fall in love with him. Until the night he raped me, I had no idea idea he could be so cruel. He had been so kind. I could see in his eyes, he loved me. But, something inside of him snapped, and God, I'm afraid of him...

Well, I'm not that good at writing summaries, but that was basically a summary of the story before the book actually begins. When Zach takes advantage of her is actually the beginning of the book. I actually got the idea for the book from Z is for Zachariah. In 9th grade, I had to read 'Alas Babylon for class, and it reminded me of Z is for Zachariah in the first place. Yes, my sister says I basically stole the book, though really, I only took the fact that she lived in a Valley-like farm town, her parents left to search for survivors, and a person shows up one day. And, also, the fact that Mr. Loomis attempts to "attack" Ann one night while she is sleeping. However, the details, characters, plot, and story are completely different.Z is for Zachariah is a great book though, and I would suggest that others read it. I had to read it in eighth grade for English. Towards the end of my 9th grade year, I started wondering what would have happened had Mr.Loomis succeeded. I started writing my own version in a notebook, changing the characters and their ages, and basically, turning it into my own story. So, these two books about nuclear attack (and they're the only two I've seen) inspired me to write my book.

I'm going to play around with this site, and see what I can do with it, so this is all I'll write................. for now ;P
